Weight-Loss Surgery Options

Southwest Healthcare offers several weight-loss options. All patients are first assessed to determine the best option for them. Achieving long-term success with any procedure is dependent on the patient adapting a healthier lifestyle. You should always talk to your physician to find out if you are a candidate for weight-loss surgery.

Adjustable Gastric Banding

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery (LAP-BAND®) helps patients lose weight by limiting the amount of food their stomachs can hold using an adjustable band.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

Laparoscopic gastric bypass is a minimally invasive procedure in which a one-ounce stomach pouch is created and attached to the small intestine. This restricts patients to eating smaller portions of food, increasing satiety and reducing absorption.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a minimally invasive procedure in which 70 to 80 percent of the stomach is removed. This reduces hunger and increases satiety with smaller portions of food. This procedure is an alternative to gastric bypass surgery.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

In the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure, surgeons create a small pouch at the top of your stomach using staples. This section of the stomach is then connected directly to the small intestine so that the rest of the stomach is bypassed. This reduces the amount of food the stomach can hold and decreases the amount of food that can be absorbed by the body.

There are risks associated with any surgical procedure. Talk with your doctor about these risks to find out if bariatric surgery is right for you.
