Speech Therapy

Speech TherapySpeech therapy at Southwest Healthcare System is dedicated to helping patients improve the quality of their lives by helping them re-establish functional and reliable communication. The speech therapy staff works to achieve that goal by evaluating, treating and managing patients who have disorders of speech, voice, language, cognition, memory and swallowing. Speech therapy services are provided in an inpatient setting.

Patients Served

The speech therapy staff treats patients who have acquired difficulty in speech, language, memory, cognition, and swallowing as a result of:

  • Stroke (CVA)
  • Brain tumor
  • Neurological/post-neurological condition
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Head and neck surgery

Specific disorders treated include:

  • Apraxia
  • Dysarthria
  • Dysphagia
  • Voice disorders
  • Laryngectomy

After evaluation, the staff develops an individualized treatment plan that focuses on re-establishing functional and reliable communication. Treatment goals may address specific communicative-cognitive deficits through a variety of facilitatory and compensatory treatment techniques. Patients who have swallowing disorders will receive an initial evaluation to help the staff develop a course of treatment.
