Childbirth and Parenting Classes

This fun and informative presentation gives expectant parents a free sneak preview of our maternity services. Nursing staff from Southwest Healthcare System will discuss pre-admission procedures and childbirth options, our Labor/Delivery/ Recovery (LDR) rooms, selecting an obstetrician and family doctor, as well as nursing practices and a guided tour of the maternity unit. We offer tours on select Monday evenings and one tour on the specified Saturdays. All tours meet in the Rancho Springs Medical Center Administrative Services building. Children under 10 are not allowed on Maternity Tours.

Childbirth Preparation

Weeknight Series
A highly recommended course for first-time moms and their partners, this 3-week series meets once a week to teach expectant parents how to meet the challenges of childbirth. It covers a range of topics, including the stages and phases of labor and birth, hospital procedures, medication options, cesarean birth and postpartum adjustment. In addition, breathing strategies, comfort measures and relaxation techniques are taught and practiced to maximize your ability to cope with the physical, emotional and mental stress of the labor process. Due to the sensitive nature of this class, it is highly recommended that you do not bring children. Please bring one pillow and a blanket.

Childbirth Preparation Express

This one-time three-hour class is a condensed version of the Childbirth Prep on Saturday. It provides basic information on the labor process, when to go to the hospital, pain coping techniques, interventions, cesarean birth, postpartum and the role of the labor support person. A Birth Relaxation DVD is included for continued practice at home. Please bring one pillow and a blanket.

Breastfeeding Class

Taught by our certified lactation educator, this class helps moms develop the unique skills needed to make breastfeeding a successful and satisfying experience. Topics covered include advantages of breastfeeding and proper breastfeeding techniques. Dads or other support persons are encouraged and welcomed. Bring a doll/stuffed animal.

Sibling Class

This one-session class is designed for siblings ages 4 to 11. Topics include adjustments to a new baby and helpful hints on becoming a big brother or sister. No limit for number of siblings per class. Bring a doll/stuffed animal.

Car Seat Safety

This free class will help expectant parents be ready to bring their baby home from the hospital. The presentation will cover the importance and proper techniques of installing a car seat for your infant or child. CHP officers are available to install your car seat after the presentation. Please be sure to bring a car seat with you.

MomS 2 MOMS Support Group

Open to mothers and nursing infants of any age.

Pregnancy and Nutrition Class

This class is designed to help new moms take those important first steps in their journey through pregnancy. Information is presented on fetal growth and development, the physical and emotional changes of pregnancy and the nutritional needs of the new mom. Moms and their support coaches are encouraged to attend as early in their pregnancy as they would like.

Childbirth Refresher

This class is designed for parents who have experienced childbirth and want a refresher. It reviews the stages and phases of labor and birth with strong emphasis on breathing and relaxation exercises and use of comfort measures and provides information on sibling adjustment. Bring one pillow and a blanket.

Newborn Care Class

This one-time class helps new parents develop the special skills and confidence necessary to care for a newborn. Diapering, bathing and comforting are a few subjects discussed and/or demonstrated. In addition, the educator will cover newborn hospital procedures and common newborn characteristics. Bring a doll/stuffed animal.

Comfort for Labor

This class is designed for parents who have already taken a labor and birth preparation class, and who would like additional hands-on practice. The focus of the class covers a wide range of comfort measures, relaxation exercises, breathing, and partner involvement for labor. Included is a Birth Relaxation DVD that includes several practice relaxation exercises for continued practice at home. Dress comfortably and bring three or four pillows and a blanket.
