Urinary incontinence is often caused by physical changes as women age, but can sometimes be caused by other conditions. Over time, it can lead to social withdrawal, emotional distress and planning your day to make sure there's a restroom nearby at all times.
Women experience urinary incontinence twice as often as men because of pregnancy and childbirth, menopause, and the structure of the female urinary tract. Women can also become incontinent from neurologic injury, birth defects, stroke, multiple sclerosis and physical problems associated with aging.
